 May 22-24, 2017 CONFERENCE ON

Language Education Policy and Inclusion (Paris)

Call for roundtable PAPERS-Paris, France

22 to 24 May (new dates)
Sponsors: Spencer Foundation, University of Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle, France; University of Wisconsin-Madison (U.S.)

While UNESCO has called for states to endorse a safe schools declaration[1], perhaps as a response to UNICEF (3 September, 2015). Education Under Fire: How Conflict in the Middle East is Depriving Children of their Schooling, we address the children and families who are forced to migrate to Europe or the U.S. fleeing poverty and/or war conditions. An under noticed effect of policy is on the critical question of children’s identities as learned in schools in the new host countries. Most of these families cannot simply ‘go back home’, and probably will not ever get to go home.

This call for papers invites submissions that take an overview of the field of Language Education Policy Studies regarding the situation of migrants and refugees, examine the potentials and limitations of existing policies, review the state of the field and envision possible futures. It encourages submissions that utilize multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches to study and research.

A conceptual orientation is proposed to motivate language education curricula that transform school cultures into constructive learning communities and cultures of connectedness, harmony and peace. Language Education Policies can help repair the contextual, psychological, ideological and social fabric of human lives and societies impacted by misconceptions based on language ideologies and language status that lead to rebuilding the social link, miscommunication, discrimination, social divisions and human struggle throughout both developed and developing countries.
